Somerset completed the construction of a new community known as Station North Townhomes on a one-acre site just blocks from Penn Station in August 2007. This beautiful development with 32 homes, just blocks from the main train station, lies in the heart of the Station North Arts and Entertainment District of Baltimore and serves as a great example of “smart growth” development in an emerging neighborhood. These garage townhomes were designed as a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Baltimore row house, and offer live-work and flex-space opportunities for artists and professionals in a highly walkable, transit-oriented neighborhood.

The land was originally owned by the City of Baltimore which awarded the development rights through an RFP. Before construction began, Somerset negotiated a Land Disposition Agreement with the City and successfully remediated this urban brown-field site in record time through the Maryland’s Department of Environment Voluntary Clean-Up Program. The Masonry Institute of Maryland, Inc. presented its 2007 award for “Exceptional Masonry Design and Detailing” to the development team.

All the houses in the community are now sold and are governed by the Station North Home Owners Association. The development of Station North Townhomes served as a catalyst for the revitalization of this important Baltimore neighborhood. The Charles Theater, Tapias Teatro, and the historic Chesapeake Restaurant on Charles Street offer vibrant neighborhood amenities. Along North Avenue just a few blocks north, a new film center has recently opened which is a joint venture between Maryland Institute of Art (MICA) and Johns Hopkins. Renovations of the historic Parkway Theater are underway, which will house the Maryland Film Festival. This, combined with the recent expansion of classrooms and studios of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and the completion of the Baltimore School of Design, attest to a strong revitalization of the neighborhood.
