Somerset Development Company, LLC (“Somerset”) and ReBuild Metro, Inc. (“ReBuild”) have partnered to revitalize vacant lots in the Johnston Square neighborhood of Baltimore City. Johnston Square is centrally located in the Old East Baltimore Historic District. The neighborhood has close proximity to major institutions, cultural attractions, regional transit, and employment opportunities (e.g., Penn Station – .5 miles; John Hopkins Hospital – .75 miles; Inner Harbor – 1 mile). The existing buildings in the neighborhood capture the spirit of the late nineteenth century, drawing inspiration from the then popular Queen Anne and Italianate styles.
ReBuild is a non-profit community developer with over 15 years of experience revitalizing the neighborhoods of East Baltimore. ReBuild has worked extensively with stakeholders in Johnston Square to create a Vision Plan for the neighborhood’s restoration. A joint venture between Somerset and New Community Partners will be the lead developer of a critical component of the Vision Plan, constructing three mixed-income multifamily apartment buildings with community amenities and retail space. The buildings will create a welcoming gateway, encouraging connectivity between Johnston Square and the Midtown and Mt. Vernon neighborhoods of Baltimore, located just one block to the west.
The first of the three multifamily buildings, 1100 Greenmount Avenue, began construction in June 2024 with completion scheduled for August 2025.
