| On Monday, nearly 1,000 Johnston Square residents, partners, and supporters gathered to celebrate a milestone almost 15 years in the making: the grand opening of the Hammond at Greenmount Park, a beautiful new building that converted an entire block of vacant lots into 109 new mixed-income apartments and the first new branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in over 15 years.
This building is a cornerstone of the Johnston Square Vision Plan, a community-led plan that calls to renew over 550 properties, eliminate vacancy, and restore Johnston Square into a healthy and vibrant community where all families can thrive—and where no one is displaced. Block by block, this vision is being brought to life through thousands of volunteer hours, hundreds of community meetings, and the work of hundreds of government, development, and construction professionals who all recognize that making a vision a reality requires deliberate actions every day—and that it can only be done if we are all working for a common cause.
We named this building the Hammond, because to all of us, Regina and Keith Hammond set the example of how to live in community—how to be the WE that we need to be to have a strong city and a healthy society. By building fellowship and partnerships and common causes, the Hammonds show us what it means to be One Johnston Square and One Baltimore. The Hammond at Greenmount Park is a reminder to each other and a lesson for our children: it shows what we can overcome and accomplish when we choose to become One.
Thank you to all of the elected officials, partners, funders, and everyone else who celebrated this milestone event with us, both in person and in spirit. There is so much more to come, and we look forward to seeing you at the next one. |
