Central West Baltimore
303 McMechen Street, Baltimore, MD 21217
Somerset Development Company, LLC and Memorial Apartments Corporation (MAC) have partnered since 2014 to create a mixed-income community along McMechen Street and Eutaw Place in Central West Baltimore which was historically ground zero of the city’s redlining. Starting with the redevelopment of Memorial Apartments (renamed Linden Park Apartments), Somerset and MAC completed a major renovation of this distressed property to preserve 233 units of affordable housing and preserved its extensive gardens for the community. As part of this redevelopment, the team subdivided the Linden Park property to build a new, 62-unit market rate apartment building, known as The Jordan, on an underutilized parking lot at the corner of McMechen and Eutaw Place. The beautifully-designed Jordan Apartments, which respects the scale and style of the historic townhouses in the neighborhood, fills in a “missing tooth” on Eutaw Place. Next door to The Jordan, Somerset and MAC partnered again to transform the empty and deteriorating Union Hall on Eutaw Place into a community arts, education and job training center known as the Baltimore Unity Hall. The Unity Hall serves as an important amenity for the entire neighborhood, bringing people together and directly addressing the historic disinvestment in the area. Taken together, these concentrated investments have made an important contribution to the health of the community as a whole.
